MACC hauls up Shafie's brother in Sabah graft probe

THE younger brother of Parti Warisan Sabah president Shafie Apdal has been called in for questioning by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission.

Hamid Apdal was called in to help investigations into the alleged embezzlement of RM1.5 billion in federal funds meant for rural projects in the state.

A source in Warisan confirmed that Hamid is being questioned by MACC.

It is understood that he arrived at the Sabah MACC office in Kota Kinabalu this morning.

An MACC source said Hamid led five anti-graft investigators to his home in Putatan at 3.30pm to search for evidence on the alleged missappropriated funds.

The team left at 6pm, and is understood to be on the way back to the Sabah MACC headquarters in Koto Kinabalu.    

To date, others detained in the probe are Warisan vice-president Peter Anthony, Youth chief Azis Jamman, a businessman contractor, and two Sabah Umno leaders - Tawau Youth chief Ariffin Kassim and Tenom Youth chief Jamawi Jaafar.

Anthony who was detained five days ago had his remand extended by another three days from today, while the 54-year old businessman’s remand was extended by another four days.

Aziz, Ariffin and Jamawi were remanded today for five days.

MACC’s probe into the alleged embezzlement involves federal funds for water and electricity supply projects in Sabah’s rural areas.

Anti-graft investigators are looking at the period from 2009 to 2015 when the alleged stealing took place the Rural and Regional Development Ministry in Sabah.

Hamid’s brother Shafie was a minister and Umno leader during this period. – October 10, 2017.
