FORMER Universiti Malaya student Siti Noor Aishah Atam, who has been charged with possession of terrorism-related materials, will know her fate on May 2.
Commissioner of justice Mohamad Shariff Abu Samah set the date after listening to both deputy public prosecutor and the defence counsel in their submissions to the court at the end of the trial today.
He said he needed time to complete writing up the verdict.
Siti Aishah is being held at Kajang Prison.
In his submission, DPP Mohamad Mustaffa Kunyalam said Siti Aishah had knowledge that the books in her possession were related to terrorism.
He said she was also linked to two men, Dr Mahmud Ahmad, a wanted terrorist with ties to Islamic State and who fled Malaysia to the Philippines, and Muamar Gadafi, who was convicted for terrorism offences in 2016.
Muamar is serving a 15-year sentence for providing military training to IS recruits in Kuala Kangsar.
Mustaffa in his submission also said Siti Aishah knew the meaning of jihad, as she admitted of studying the matter. He also said the prosecutor had submitted a police report lodged in 2014 by her father Atam Jusoh in which he said he tried to stop her from going to Syria.
“We do not tender it as a substantive evidence but only as an evidence to challenge her character,” said Mustaffa.
In the police report, Atam said Siti Aishah wanted to go to Syria and would commit suicide if she was barred from going there to jihad.
Defence counsel Mohd Kamaruzaman Wahab in his submission said the accused had no knowledge that the books in her possession were related to terrorism.
He said the prosecutor had to call three experts to testify that the books were related to terrorism.
“The public would not know this as it is sold openly,” he said.
Present at the court today were Siti Aishah’s parents, Atam and Saadiah Ibrahim.
Siti Aishah may face a life term or imprisonment not more than 30 years or a fine if found guilty. – April 18, 2017.
