Still living in shadow of communalism, 62 years on

After 62 years of Merdeka, we should be fighting for a system that helps the weak, punishes the corrupt and unites us all. – The Malaysian Insight pic by Irwan Majid, August 28, 2019.

MALAYSIAN news was once again ablaze with the fires of bigotry after fugitive preacher Zakir Naik likened his right to remain in Malaysia, where he is a permanent resident, with the position of the Chinese community.

His comments insinuated that ethnic Chinese are merely guests in the country, and were clearly meant to rack up support for himself among the growing number of Malay nationalists. Such comments are, sadly, not unusual for anyone who has lived in the Malaysia of the last few decades.

  • Firstly, our Constitution which was modelled after British colonialism needs a rewrite. The modern Constitution must promote nationalism instead of race and religion.

Secondly, communal and religious parties must not allowed to exist in new Malaysia.

  • The schooling years at primary and secondary levels are the period when actual nation building ideals are practised. Our failure is there. At present, while the Muslim children are doing Agama, the others are doing Moral education where they learn about all religions including Islam. In moral education the highlights are the 'good' points of all religions. Can moral education or civic be on its own as a school and examination subject for all Malaysians schools? Agama can be the additional subject for Muslims and even non Muslims if they are interested.

  • The first hurdle to any constitution that promote nationalism in Malaysia will be to overcome the list of public holidays in the country. It is heavily tilted towards race and religion. Secondly will the majority race and religion group agree to accept the minority as equal. Dream on! Our only solution is in the education system. At primary and secondary levels, race and religion only come into play via adult and community influence, nothing else.

  • Our SIS is in trouble, again due to a skewed provision in our Constitution.
