POLICE are close to completing investigations into preacher Zakir Naik, Inspector-General of Police Abdul Hamid Bador said tonight.

A total of 515 police reports have been lodged over the controversial preacher, who has been blamed for offending Malaysian Hindus as well as Chinese when speaking at a ceramah in Kota Baru, Kelantan, earlier this month.

Hamid said the Indian national was being investigated under the Penal Code by Bukit Aman’s Classified Criminal Investigation Unit (D5).

“Zakir and a few witnesses have been called in to have their statements taken. Investigations are almost complete and the papers will be submitted to the attorney-general soon.

“The IGP has also issued an order prohibiting Zakir from conducting any ceramah activity until investigations are finished.

“Zakir has agreed to abide by this order to discontinue his series of ceramah around the country,” Abdul Hamid said in a statement.

The IGP also said investigations were ongoing into other sensitive issues which resulted in many police reports being lodged of late, namely the khat/Jawi controversy and the hoisting of the Jalur Gemilang upside down.

Hamid was not specific on the exact case concerning the upside-down national flag, but he said 69 police reports had been lodged, and nine investigation papers opened under the Penal Code, the Communications and Multimedia Act and the Minor Offences Act 1955.

It was reported recently that the Malaysian flag was accidentally hung upside down by a foreign worker at an international school in Pahang, and at the home of an elderly man in Butterworth. However, Hamid did not state if these were the cases concerned.

He said investigations are also ongoing into statements made by Chinese education group Dong Zong, and its chairman Tan Tai Kim and secretary Ng Chai Heng have both given their statements at Bukit Aman yesterday.

A total of 24 police reports were lodged over the khat issue.

The IGP said police were giving updates on these cases as a warning to the public not to stir up sentiments and racialise issues. – August 23, 2019.

  • ANY AMOUNT OF INVESTIGATIONS would not be any good because with a 'stroke of pen' Mahathir would give the verdict to his favor like what had happened in Zakir Naik before the investigation papers were out. Where is the rule of law, IGP? People begin to suspect as to who is listening to whom or who is telling whom? Mahathir is telling the police or police is telling Mahathir is what we believe that MAHATHIRISM has creeped in, in this NEW GOVERNMENT.

  • Can PDRM really be independent on this Zakir issue? Most if not all Non Malays want him out of our country because he obviously, openly and intentionally stir hatred among different races and religions in our multi culture, religion and race in our mother land of all Malaysians. The political and religious and racial implication of the final action has far reaching effect on GE 15 voting trend. Dont take us for granted, we are just as intelligent as most of you politicians, including Mahathir. Follow rules of law , not your emotion or even not your personal thought matters. Or we will name u another hypocrite.
