POLICE do not have the authority to disapprove the Pakatan Harapan rally scheduled for Saturday as it is in compliance with the law, said PH Youth.

DAP Youth international secretary Howard Lee Chuan How said police had been informed of the rally, which was in accordance with the Peaceful Assembly Act, meaning an official “approval” was not required.

“It is not for police to approve or disapprove (the rally). We have, in accordance with the Peaceful Assembly Act, informed police much earlier (about the rally).

“They (the authorities) have met us, our secretariat have seen them. Conversations were nice and frank. We are of the view that we are in full compliance (with the law),” he told reporters at the DAP headquarters in Kuala Lumpur today.

The mega rally, which will be held at Padang Timur in Petaling Jaya, will cap the opposition coalition’s 1Malaysia Development Berhad nationwide roadshow.

Set to take place from 4pm to midnight, the event will see talks by PH leaders, cultural performances and a short film competition.

The speakers will include PH chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad, PKR deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali, Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, PH president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, Amanah president Mohamad Sabu and national laureate A. Samad Said.

Organisers said the rally was expected to draw 100,000 people, and had given an assurance that it would be peaceful and safe.

Lee said 15 national-level organisations, such as the Bar Council, Bersih 2.0 and Ikram Malaysia, were invited.

PH leaders have called on all Malaysians who desire change to attend the rally.

During the final leg of the Sayangi Malaysia, Hapus Kleptokrasi (Love Malaysia, End Kleptocracy) ceramah in Penang on Saturday, PH leaders told the crowd that the people must send a clear message of their discontent to the government. – October 9, 2017.
