PUTRAJAYA should continue to meet with anti-Lynas activists to review its decision to allow the rare earths refinery to continue operations in Malaysia, said Port Dickson MP Anwar Ibrahim.

“I’m supporting attempts to seek meetings with the government to review the decision. This should be done amicably through meaningful negotiations between the activists and the government.

“I believe there should be open for negotiations to take place,” said the PKR president after meetings with civil society groups and Federal Territory Pakatan Harapan leaders in Kuala Lumpur today.

Anwar was asked to comment on the government’s decision to renew Lynas’ operating licence for another six months.

Putrajaya decided on August 15 to extend Lynas Advanced Materials Plant’s operating licence for six months subject to terms and conditions.

Among the conditions for the licence renewal is the construction of a cracking and leaching facility overseas, building a permanent disposal facility for its low-level radioactive waste, and stopping its research and development work on turning its wastes for agricultural usage.

The decision was met by resistance from anti-Lynas activists who held a protest in Kuantan on Sunday. – August 20, 2019.
