THE suggestion to bring Indonesian e-hailing logistics company Go-Jek to Malaysia will be discussed in the cabinet, said Transport Minister Anthony Loke.
Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman will bring the proposal, said Loke at an event in Kuala Lumpur today.
He said his ministry will be involved if the idea is approved.
“A proposal will be brought by Syed Saddiq to the cabinet, in terms of how it can help create jobs… the cabinet will deliberate.”
Syed Saddiq, in a tweet yesterday, announced his intention to bring Go-Jek to Malaysia as a way of creating jobs, especially for “mat motor”, or Malay youth motorcyclists.
He said the group needs employment, not one-off welfare programmes.
He also said he has met Go-Jek’s management, and yesterday, brought founder Nadiem Makarim to meet Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Loke.
“As I said before, we are open to proposals. We are open to suggestion from the private sector.
“Any private companies who want to invest in Malaysia, open their operations in Malaysia or propose solutions to our country, is something we will look into.
“We are not going to reject any proposals per say but of course further studies need to be carried out, especially on framework, safety and operations,” he said.
He added that, while his cabinet colleague Syed Saddiq is looking from the perspective of job creation, his ministry is more concern of the safety and operations aspect.
However, the Seremban MP said all points of view will be heard and deliberated in the cabinet, and the proposal will be looked at seriously.
“I am not against the idea in principle, although I’ve said that the ministry of transport is not ready to introduce two-wheel e-hailing, but we are a dynamic government we will not reject any possibilities before studying them,” he said.
“Yes, we have a concern for safety, but this is something we can look at and ensure that it is at its best,” he added.
Loke also said the government will ensure that no one company is monopolising the market. – August 20, 2019.
