THE Paris prosecutor’s office has opened a criminal probe into the death of Nora Anne Quoirin, reports Reuters.

French prosecutors regularly launch investigations into cases involving the country’s citizens abroad. Nora Anne’s mother is from Belfast, while her father is French.

Negri Sembilan police chief Mohamad Mat Yusop declined to comment on the French probe.

Lawyer Sankara Nair, representing the Quoirin family, earlier urged Malaysian police to accept an offer by French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian to help investigate the circumstances leading to the teenager’s death.

“It’s a very good proposal. I hope police will accept the assistance,” he told Reuters.

Nora Anne’s remains were found on Tuesday, 10 days after she went missing from a rainforest resort in Seremban, about 70km south of Kuala Lumpur.

Her naked body was found in a ravine some 2km from The Dusun resort, where she had disappeared a day after her family arrived for a vacation on August 3.

Her family had feared a criminal connection to her disappearance, saying Nora Anne was a special needs child and had never voluntarily left them before.

Police are expected to reveal the post-mortem results today. – August 15, 2019.
