PASIR Gudang MP Hassan Abdul Karim has called on Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad to step down and hand over the reins to Anwar Ibrahim to ensure the survival of Pakatan Harapan.
In a statement today, PKR’s Hassan said that this was the only way to prevent the ruling coalition from breaking up like its predecessor Pakatan Rakyat did, as the Sarawak state elections looms.
“I hope Tun Dr Mahathir will take a bold step like British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill, who relinquished power after leading the British and the Allies to victory against the Axis, namely the Germans and Japanese in World War 2, and handed the post of prime minister to other leaders.”
As one of the coalition component leaders who signed the letter to the King endorsing Dr Mahathir for the top job, Hassan said he is of the view that the time has come for the PM to step down.
“It’s clear that he can no longer handle a lot of issues,” he said.
The former Johor PKR chief said Dr Mahathir appeared to have lost the ability to take criticism stemming from his treatment of hot issues related to race, religion and the royalty.
Hassan said this while commenting on Dr Mahathir calling Dong Zong “racist” for opposing the government’s plan to teach Jawi and khat in the vernacular schools.
Hassan said he acknowledged Dr Mahathir’s contributions to PH, especially in leading it to victory in the 2018 general election and in ensuring a smooth transition of power, but stated that it was nonetheless time for the PM to let PKR president Anwar take over the job.
“The recent developments in the country point to issues which are dividing the people, hence it is time that the mantle of the prime minister post is handed to Anwar Ibrahim by Tun Dr Mahathir immediately so that the Pakatan Harapan government is saved.”
It has been agreed among the PH components that Dr Mahathir would hand over the reins to Anwar before the term is up. – August 14, 2019.

My observation is that Mahathir has already made up his mind to leave Pakatan. That could explain why he was cordial in inviting PAS/UMNO for talks, possibly to gauge their support before planning his next move. The Dong Jong issue was the one he was waiting for to use to unite the Malays. My money is once the PAS and UMNO merger is done the next move is with Bersatu. He is ready and willing to let DAP and PKR be the opposition.
