HUMAN Resources Minister M. Kulasegaran will raise the permanent residency status Zakir Naik at cabinet tomorrow, after the controversial Muslim preacher allegedly insulted Malaysian Hindus.

He said Zakir’s “presence in Malaysia is embarrassing to all Malaysians” and his status here must be reviewed.

“His actions do not reflect one deserving of a permanent resident status and this will be brought up in the next cabinet meeting,” Kulasegaran, who is also DAP national vice-chairman. said in a statement today.

Mumbai-born Zakir at a recent ceramah speech in Kota Baru reportedly said it was unfortunate that Hindus in Malaysia were more loyal to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi than to Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

He also said Hindus in India had more rights than Muslims there.

Zakir had praised Dr Mahathir for being a leader who could stand up to other countries, as Malaysia had given him permanent residency despite India’s request to extradite him where he is wanted for allegedly inciting terrorism, giving hate speeches and money laundering.

Kulasegaran said Zakir had touched a raw nerve in Malaysia’s multi-ethnic society by questioning the loyalty of its citizens.

“For this, necessary action must be taken against him.

“Zakir Naik is an outsider who is a fugitive and has little knowledge of the Malaysian history, therefore he should not be given such privilege to run down other Malaysians, what more questioning their loyalty to the country.

“It’s time for Malaysians to unite and safeguard the peace and stability of the nation by exposing the dubious strategy of Zakir in using religious and racial sentiments in a tolerant and harmonious country.

“It’s time for the fugitive foreigner to leave Malaysia and to face charges of terrorism and money laundering charges in India.” – August 13, 2019.
