THE Selangor speaker has dismissed talk that he postponed the state assembly sitting on Tuesday because he objected to the tabling of a unilateral conversion bill.

Ng Suee Lim said the accusation against him is nothing but a rumour, and that the postponement was in accordance with House rules.

“Talk that I adjourned the sitting because I objected to the amendment is not true. My duty as speaker is to oversee the proceedings.

“When there are few assemblymen to debate, the proceedings will move faster. And when the meeting is over, it will come to a motion to suspend the meeting, in accordance with Article 15(2),” he said in Shah Alam today.

Earlier today, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said the party stands by Ng’s decision to adjourn the House, which prevented the bill from being tabled for debate.

He said the party’s stand on the conversion of minors to Islam is that it can be done only with the consent of both parents.

Ng also reportedly refused to sign a document regarding the amendment.

Lim, who is also finance minister, dismissed speculation that Ng risked being removed as speaker.

“We will defend our speaker in Selangor. There is no problem at all.” – August 8, 2019.
