POLICE are on to Red Shirts leader Jamal Md Yunos after his latest stunt, which saw him smashing 20 cartons of beer in front of the Selangor state secretariat building in Shah Alam today.

Shah Alam police chief Assistant Commissioner Shafien Mamat said police had received a report on the incident and were investigating the case for unlawful assembly.

“All those who were involved in this morning’s incident will be investigated,” Shafien said in a brief statement.

Earlier today, Jamal, who is also Sungai Besar Umno division chief, smashed 20 cartons of beer in front of the Selangor state secretariat building as a sign of protest against the state government for considering applications to hold a beer festival in the state.

He had said he wanted to give the beers to Selangor Menteri Besar Mohamed Azmin Ali and his exco members, and tell them that it was okay for them to consume alcohol in their offices or homes, but not elsewhere.

He started smashing the cartons with a sledgehammer after guards locked the gates at the building’s main entrance.

This is not Jamal’s first brush with the law.

He was arrested in November last year, a day before the Bersih 5 rally. Jamal and his Red Shirts supporters had earlier threatened to disrupt the rally if he went on.

He was also arrested in September 2015 after he and his supporters had planned a pro-Malay gathering at Kuala Lumpur’s Chinatown in Jalan Petaling Street.

Earlier today, Jamal told The Malaysian Insight that he was against the state government allowing festivals associated with beer, as such festivals would corrupt the minds of the youth.

“We came here to hand the beers to them, so that if they want to get drunk, they can get drunk in their office or their homes, but not elsewhere.”

He took offence at Azmin saying that the state would approve a German food and beverage (F&B) festival at a supermarket in Klang next week if the organiser meet the rules and regulations.

Azmin had also said that he had approved similar programmes in the past because the organisers had fulfilled the terms and conditions, including those of the local councils.

Jamal said his protest today was not about religion or culture, but  was against immoral activity.

“If they want to drink alcohol they can do it in the pubs until they are dead, but don’t hold festivals or promote beer.

“It is not a good habit to consume beer. This event should not be encouraged. Drinking beer is not about religion or culture; it is an immoral activity.

Jamal is well known for his public antics, especially outside the Selangor state secretariat building in Shah Alam.

Last December, he went there clad in a towel, to protest the water crisis in the state. In January this year, he arranged 10 single beds in front of the state secretariat building. On the bedsheets were written “DAP – Dapat Aiskrim Percuma” (DAP gets free ice-cream) – to protest gambling dens and message parlours in the state.

In February, Jamal arrived at the state secretariat building in a hearse, dressed as a grave digger. He also brought a coffin to demand that Azmin explain the alleged misappropriation of Yayasan Warisan Anak Selangor Fund.

In May, he arrived in a bus with his followers dressed as zombies to protest alleged phantom voters in the Sekinchan state seat.

Jamal also mobilised his supporters to disrupt Bersih 5 protests.

Last year, he staged a protest outside the Malaysiakini office alleging the portal was funded by George Soros.
