ANWAR Ibrahim is still PKR supremo despite his feud with deputy president Azmin Ali, party division leaders said today.
Representatives of 198 divisions, including 30 heads, from across the country, appeared at a press conference today to show support for the 72-year-old Port Dickson MP.
PKR has 219 divisions.
“We want to take this opportunity to reaffirm our support for Anwar to lead the party and be the next prime minister,” said Kangar chief Noor Amin Ahmad today.
Julau MP Larry Sng and Klebang assemblyman Gue Teck were among the others present at the gathering in Pantai Dalam.
“Our support shows that PKR is still united under Anwar and clears the air that the party is breaking up,” said Noor Amin.
The Kangar MP said the division chiefs also reaffirmed their backing for the resolution reached at the party retreat in Port Dickson on July 21.
The three-day retreat had culminated in a resolution to back Anwar’s leadership.
Conspicuously missing from the list of divisions pledging support for the president were Gombak, Ampang, Nibong Tebal, Rantau Panjang, Cheras, Ketereh, Juli and Tumpat.
Gombak is helmed by Selangor Mentri Besar Amiruddin Shaari and is Azmin’s home division while Ampang is led by PKR vice-president Zuraida Kamaruddin. Nibong Tebal is led by Anwar’s former political secretary and former Penang deputy chief minister 1 Manson Othman.
Although some divisions did not voice their support, it did not mean that they did not support Anwar, said Noor Amin.
“These divisions merely did not reply our letters,” said Noor Amin.
On whether disciplinary action should be taken against Azmin for the video scandal, Noor Amin said, the issue did not arise.
“The issue arose from a response to Kadir Jasin’s suggestion that Anwar should take action against Azmin. But as the central committee has decided it is a police case, it’s outside of our powers.
“The issue of other leaders also do not arise as we are here to reaffirm our support for Anwar.” – August 4, 2019.
