Defend our rights in 'Mother of All Elections'

DEAR friends,

Many of you may have seen a short video being sent around yesterday, in which I was dragged and my staff, Adrian Yeo, was arrested.

The incident did not occur yesterday, but during the 2011 Sarawak state election. We were objecting to, and querying, at that time, a number of issues, including a questionable blackout that occured at the counting centre, and why there had not been a recount.

Adrian lamented aloud, “where is justice?”, before he was arrested. I did what any employer would do, and that was to stop the unjustified arrest.

We eventually lost the Senadin seat by 58 votes. Adrian was taken to the police station and released around 3am.

We have this running joke in the office – that anyone who works for me will inevitably have a taste of the police lock-up. Nevertheless, it reminds us of the dangers and risks of our work.

Just a few days ago, my old friend and comrade, Tian Chua, was sent to Kajang Prison – for making sure more than 500 participants arrested during the Bersih 3.0 rally were all safely released.

This reminds us that in an election, anything is possible. The darkest and blackest modes to ensure victory for Barisan Nasional will be employed.

I am reminded today that polling and counting agents are the last lines of defence against unfair elections. Please do register to be agents, with us or with Bersih. Do not let them rob us of our rights to a free and fair election.

My staff and I are touched by your concerns. Let us turn our worries into action, and let us all defend our rights in the looming “Mother of All Elections”.

Thank you and God bless. – October 5, 2017.
