PKR senator Mohd Imran Abd Hamid has come under further attack for his proposal to enact a law to protect men from being seduced by women and tempted into committing sexual offences.

PKR president Anwar Ibrahim in a statement today described the proposal as illogical and an insult to women.

“Keadilan rejects the proposal,” said Anwar, adding that the senator should retract the proposal made at the Dewan Negara yesterday.

Anwar, who is also Port Dickson MP, said the proposal gives the impression that men lack morality and self-control that they could easily give in to temptation and commit heinous acts.

“It is better to focus on empowering women and enforcing the law to protect them from sexual harassment.”

Mohd Imran had yesterday proposed for a law to be enacted to protect men from being seduced by women and tempted to commit sexual offences.

“I would like to ask the minister if we could propose a Sexual Harassment Act to protect men from the actions, words and the attire of women which could cause men to lust over them, and eventually culminating in acts such as incest, rape, molestation, pornography and others,” he told the Dewan Negara.

The senator said certain actions by women can cause men to give in to temptations and commit offences that could land them in trouble with the law.

His proposal, however, was met with immediate scorn from the likes of Deputy Women, Family, and Community Development Minister Hannah Yeoh who said: “God did not make men equal to animals. Men were given willpower to decide, to think, to exercise restraint.”

Sisters in Islam and activist Ivy Josiah also urged Mohd Imran not to hold women responsible for men’s attitudes and behaviour. – August 1, 2019.
