UMNO and PAS will not form a Taliban-type ultra-conservative Islamic government if they win federal power in the next general election, said Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
The Umno president said although both parties have agreed to cooperate on race and religious matters, they also have agreed that the interest of other races and religions must also be taken care of.
“If our unity is fated to form the next federal government, we will not ignore other races and religions in Malaysia.
“We will not form a Taliban government as we will take into consideration the views of all other component parties, including those from Sabah and Sarawak,” he said.
The Taliban government refers to an ultra-conservative type of governance as imposed by the Mujahidin fighters in Afghanistan where the rule of law is based on hudud and Islamic principles.
In March, Perak DAP chief Nga Kor Ming had said that a unity government under the Umno-PAS pact would see Malaysia turning into Afghanistan under the Taliban rule.
His remarks were heavily criticised by various quarters, including leaders within DAP.
Speaking while officiating the Parit Buntar Umno division meeting in Sg Nibong today, Zahid also said the current Pakatan Harapan government was a result of DAP’s work in wrecking the unity in Umno and PAS, which had caused splinter parties such as Bersatu and Amanah.
However, he said, Bersatu was now looking at forging ties with Umno and PAS as it does not want to hand over power to Anwar Ibrahim.
“It is an open secret that Anwar will not be the next prime minister as the person who had promised him that is looking at reneging his promise.
“With this creating ripples in Pakatan Harapan, Bersatu is now looking at Umno and PAS as it does not want Anwar to commit a coup d’etat.
“There are no official talks yet, but Umno and PAS will reject any overtures from Bersatu or PKR as long as they are in cohorts with DAP,” he said. – July 28, 2019.
