PKR members and leaders should put aside factional rivalry and stop all sectarian manoeuvres in the party as this will only lead to self-destruction, said vice-president Chua Tian Chang.
Everyone in the party must give undivided support to the president and deputy president, he said.
“We should not let our internal contradictions continue to deteriorate. We need a lot of concerted and level-headed efforts to resolve issues in order to be back on track serving the people.
“The rakyat expect us to perform our duty and deliver economic progress, social welfare and good governance as the government of the day,” the former Batu MP better known as Tian Chua said in a statement today.
At the same time, Chua also warned the young Turks in the party not to question his loyalty to PKR and president Anwar Ibrahim.
“Anwar Ibrahim and his suffering have inspired thousands Malaysians like me to join the movement for change.
“I have dedicated 20 years of my life to this struggle. I will take it as a serious insult if anyone, especially newcomers in the party, who question my loyalty, either to Anwar or the party.”
Lately, there has been a “vicious agenda with hideous objective” of causing public confusion in the party, he said.
He accused certain quarters of intentionally creating a perception that PKR is divided or even at the verge of collapse.
“There are some elements within the party have overzealously displayed support for this leader and that leader.
“Consciously or unconsciously, some supporters strive to outdo one another and intensified tension within the party.
“No matter what is their motive, their action is sowing seeds of suspicion and conflict between different leaders. Unfortunately, it has seriously undermined the party unity,” he said.
He said deputy president Azmin Ali, vice-presidents Nurul Izzah Anwar, Zuraida Kamaruddin, Dr Xavier Jeyakumar and himself were all prominent figures since the founding days of the party.
“Our loyalty towards Anwar was not just scribbles on a piece of paper but was proven by long years of commitment and determination.”
The statement on party unity comes at a time when PKR is dealing with the fallout from a sex video implicating Azmin.
Former Santubong PKR youth leader Haziq Abdullah Abdul Aziz admitted being one of the men while saying the other was Economic Affairs Minister Azmin.
Azmin denied the claim, saying that it was a plot to end his political career.
The manner in which the party handled the scandal has also led to a rift between Anwar and Azmin.
The police have arrested 11 men, including Haziq and Anwar’s political secretary Farhash Wafa Salvador, over the sex video.
In recent days, party leaders and divisions have expressed support for Anwar, while some urged the party to sack Azmin. – July 27, 2019.
