TWO men were remanded by police investigating the cause of pollution of Sg Selangor, said Selangor police chief Noor Azam Jamaludin.
He said the two men in their 30s were picked up in Kuala Selangor. They had been working on a pontoon linked to a mining company.
Noor Azam said they would be in remand until Sunday.
“The case is being investigated under Section 430 of the Penal Code. We have also recorded statements from 10 individuals,” he said after attending an anti-terrorism drill today.
Section 430 of the Penal Code states that those found guilty of doing damage to works of irrigation or by wrongfully diverting water may be punished by up to 30 years in jail, a fine, or both.
He said police are working with the state’s water authorities Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd and Lembaga Urus Air Selangor to discover the cause of pollution in Sg Selangor.
On claims that a group fishing in the river was responsible the pollution, Noor Azam police had received a report of the claim but it was yet to be proved.
Sabotage or negligence is likely to be the cause of the second case of pollution in Sg Selangor, Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari said on Monday.
He said a pontoon on the river linked to a mining company was involved, and that the diesel leak was either a deliberate or negligent act.
“We believe that there were two diesel drums on the pontoon that could have been sabotaged.
“It could have been done by someone because it is not possible for the hose to leak. It couldn’t be the wind or other factors, because a tool is needed for the leak to happen,” he said after a visit to the Sg Selangor Phase 2 water treatment plant.
More than a million consumers in the Klang Valley experience dry taps four water treatment plants had to be shut down due to a diesel contamination in Sg Selangor last Sunday.
