A SESSIONS court judge has been arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) today for allegedly accepting bribes in exchange for the release of illegal immigrants.
The judge from Kuala Kubu Baru Sessions Court was arrested earlier today, said MACC chief Latheefa Koya.
The 45-year-old judge is part of a racket involved in freeing illegal immigrants who had been arrested in exchange for cash.
Latheefa said a sum of money had also been seized during the judge’s arrest.
Last week, MACC arrested eight people over the same case.
The suspects – a deputy public prosecutor, a lawyer and police officers – were arrested on Wednesday and were originally remanded for five days.
Today, their remand was extended for another five days.
Investigations are being conducted under Section 16(A)(B) of the MACC Act for bribery.
The cops still in remand are of various ranks, including corporal and sergeant. Five of them are investigating officers, while one is a court policeman.
The Malaysian Insight first reported on the case three days ago. The case came to light when MACC found RM17,500 on the lawyer, who is said to have facilitated the release of nine illegals.
Another RM85,000, believed to be from illegal activities, was seized from the DPP. – July 22, 2019.
