THE Home Ministry must investigate allegations that independent preacher Wan Ji Wan Hussin was beaten during his three-day stay at Kajang prison, said PKR president Anwar Ibrahim.

Wan Ji in a YouTube video dated July 14 said he was hit a few times by a warden.

“All allegations should be thoroughly investigated and I believe the Home Ministry will take action,” said the Port Dickson MP in Parliament today.

“During my experience in the Sungai Buloh prison, I was not (assaulted by the jail keepers) but then I was constantly advising them not to break the rules.

“It is mandatory for the Prisons Department to investigate (Wan Ji’s claims).”

In the brief video on Friday, Wan Ji said a warden who kept his face covered had told him to remove his glasses before asking Wan Ji if he was the person who had insulted the sultan.

The warden then started hitting him, Wan Ji said.

Wan Ji was initially be sentenced to nine months’ jail under the Sedition Act by the Sessions Court for posting offensive content against the Selangor sultan in 2012.

He was slapped with an additional three months by the high court last week, based on a cross-appeal by the prosecution in early 2018.

Last Friday, he was granted a stay of execution on his year-long jail sentence by the Shah Alam High Court, pending an appeal against his sentence.

The preacher had to surrender his passport to the court and said is not allowed to leave the country without the court’s approval. – July 16, 2019.
