A CLAUSE on postponing party elections is among several constitutional amendments to be proposed at Bersatu’s extraordinary general meeting (EGM) on Saturday, said party insiders.

Based on an internal document sighted by The Malaysian Insight, the proposal – if approved by delegates at the EGM – would give the party’s supreme council the right to postpone elections at all levels in the party.

“The postponement of party elections should not be for more than 18 months from the original election date,” read the document.

Another proposed amendment is to hold branch-level elections every two years. At present, the constitution sets a three-year term.

Elections for top leadership posts and division levels will be held every three years.

Bersatu constitutional amendment committee member Mohd Radzi Sheikh Ahmad told a recent briefing for delegates in Shah Alam that the reduction of the term for two years at branch levels was to encourage ground-level leaders to work harder.

On eligibility to contest party elections, for branch posts, a contesting member must be a member for at least 12 months before the election, or held a position at the district, state or national level.

For the party’s top posts of chairman, president and deputy president, candidates must have been a member for three years and has been a supreme council member or division chief for one term.

For all other national-level posts, candidates must have been a member for at least 12 months, and held posts at the division level, been a member of the supreme council or held a state leadership position.

The EGM will be held in Serdang. – July 15, 2019.
