UMNO should not be dismissive of Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s invitation to Malay parties to Bersatu, said former party vice-president Hishammuddin Hussein.
Hishammuddin said Umno should consider all views, including those from non-Malay parties.
“Don’t be haughty, don’t be arrogant, as the public is watching.
“While we discuss the unity of the ummah, we should also look at unity among the races.
“I have always stressed that in looking at the future, we must look at all these sentiments,” he said at Parliament lobby today.
Bersatu chairman Dr Mahathir invited all Malay parties, including Umno, to join Bersatu in efforts to unite the Malays last Friday.
“If we are split, we become weak, united we stand, divided we fall (bercerai roboh, bersatu teguh). (But) we find that there are people forming new parties, (now) we have become six, soon there will be 10, (then) 100. There are 30 people in one party, How to win (the election),” he said after the Johor Bersatu Aidilfitri open house at the Dewan Serbaguna Johor Jaya last Friday.
Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi dismissed the invitation, and said Pakatan Harapan member parties Bersatu and Amanah should be disbanded in the interest of Malay unity.
Zahid said Umno would not cooperate with any party or leader who has close relationships with a party that neglects Malays and Islam.
Bersatu and Amanah’s partner in PH is DAP, which is accused by Umno and its affiliates of seeking to undermine Malay interests.
“We do not want a split in the Malay community but a reason for that is the existence of parties like Bersatu and Amanah. The best solution is to disband Bersatu and Amanah. – July 8, 2019.
