NOORYANA Najwa Najib has expressed her solidarity with her stepbrother, Riza Aziz, who faces money-laundering charges at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court tomorrow morning.

The 31-year-old daughter of former prime minister Najib Razak described events today an Instragram post that was hashtagged #doublejeopardy and #siblingsstandtogether

“Today MACC decided to charge my brother. He has faced a civil lawsuit over the same subject matter in the US. As part of the settlement, Red Granite has paid a substantial amount to the DOJ.

“But despite the settlement in the US and the fact that alleged wrong-doings occurred entirely outside of Malaysia, MACC decides to press charges after a whole year of leaving this case in cold storage.

“He is not a criminal, he’s my brother,” she said on her Instagram page yananajib

The 43-year-old, who is the son of Rosmah Mansor from a previous marriage, was arrested at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya at noon today, but was released later on bail.

Riza, who holds a background in finance and studied at the London School of Economics, was questioned four times by MACC in July last year.

Red Granite Pictures paid US$60 million (RM247 million) to the US Department of Justice (DOJ) in March last year to settle claims it produced three films using funds siphoned off 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).

Both Riza and Nooryana were also named in a RM680 million forfeiture suit filed by prosecutors last month for assets allegedly bought with 1MDB funds. – July 4, 2019.

  • If this is a criminal case and the case in the US is a civil suit as she has mentioned herself, how can this be double jeopardy? Double jeopardy means a person is charged more than once for the same crime.

  • But the source of the money came from a company in Malaysia. Laundering the countrys money out and using it outside doesnt mean you are innocent in Malaysia.

  • Dear NOORYANA Najwa Najib, your brother may not be a criminal but he is a thief of the rakyat's money. No sane person would pay DOJ USD60m if he is truly innocent. You too should be worried about the money you received from him because those money belong to the people.
