FORMER prime minister Najib Razak owes the Inland Revenue Board (IRB) RM1.69 billion in additional tax assessments, The Edge reports today.
Quoting court documents sighted by the business news portal, the report said the figure was the sum of taxes owed in 2011-2017 and penalties for late payment.
Najib is reported to have failed to respond to the IRB’s inquiries, thereby incurring hikes in the taxes owed.
He incurred a 10% increase on the sum of of RM1.47 billion owed due to failure to pay up within 30 days of the date the initial assessment notice was received, and he incurred a further 5% compound on the renewed sum within 60 days of the notice.
The writ of summons dated June 25, 2019 follows the first assessment notice dated March 20, 2019.
“The additional assessment notice was sent via registered postage to the defendant on March 25, 2019 to his last known address by the plaintiff at the time.
“The additional assessment notice was never returned to the plaintiff,” the writ stated.
“The plaintiff has the right to recoup the income tax that is still owed, as with the increases imposed on the defendant as a tax which is due to be paid,” said the writ.
Interest at 5% per annum is chargeable on the RM1.69 billion claim from the date of judgement until the sum is fully paid up. – July 4, 2019.
