THE government’s motion to compel MPs to declare their assets is unfair, said Najib Razak, as some lawmakers earn money from professional work.
The former prime minister said asset declarations should be based on what MPs get from their parliamentary allowance.
“Some will declare sources of income that are not based on MPs’ allowance, such as income from professional work as a lawyer or architect.
“If other sources of income are declared as assets, it is not fair. The declaration should be based on our income as MPs,” he told reporters at the Parliament lobby today.
The Pekan MP was briefly released from court, where his SRC International Sdn Bhd trial is ongoing, to attend a briefing for lawmakers in Parliament.
He added that MPs may be put at risk after making public their assets’ worth.
“Anything could happen in terms of safety.”
The Dewan Rakyat yesterday approved a motion requiring MPs, senators, and their spouses and children to declare their assets to the speaker. – July 3, 2019.
