PUTRAJAYA should also ask businessmen to declare their assets, and not just politicians, police and civil servants, said veteran lawmaker Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah.

“Why target us (politicians) only? Maybe, it’s because we are greater in numbers,” the Gua Musang MP told reporters in Parliament lobby today.

“We should investigate those who have retired, too, and see who has done wrong,” said Tengku Razaleigh when asked about yesterday’s motion to require MPs to declare their assets to Parliament.

Unlike others, MPs did not hide their assets behind trustees said Tengku Razaleigh.

“They should restrict it to the executive,” said the former finance minister.

The longest-serving MP said he had always declared his assets.

“But they shouldn’t use the Standing Orders to pass a motion to compel MPs to declare their assets.

“If they want all MPs to declare their assets, they should pass a law and all the MPs would be compelled to follow the law.”

Parliament yesterday approved a motion for MPs to declare their assets and liabilities to the House.

Prior to that, only the government MPs had agreed to declare their assets. As of today, 127 out of 139 government MPs have declared their assets to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission.

The list of MPs who have declared their assets can be obtained from the MACC website. – July 2, 2019.

  • POLITICS is the BIGGEST BUSINESS in Malaysia. People fight to get into high political positions where their signatures are worth gold. And it is the money earned by the backdoor that makes them millionaires and billionaires during just one term in office. This is "durian runtuh" is not declared to the Income Tax. Hence the need to declare it, not just to the MACC, but to the public. Kes "siapa makan cabai dia rasa pedas" kah?

  • Tg Razaleigh should just retire from active politics. I am frankly dumbfounded by his comment about requiring business people to also declare. He has nothing more to contribute and should hence just gracefully withdraw from politics

  • What an idiot? Businessmen do not hold public office or serve in the public services. That is the big difference. They declare their income to the IRB. MPs are elected on the basis of public trust and they are expected to serve the public and raise public issues in Parliament. Therefore, there should be a public disclosure of their assets. MPs are not elected to line their own pockets while in the service of the public.
