LAWMAKERS will be required to make asset declarations to Parliament every two years, said Liew Vui Keong.

The de facto law minister, speaking to reporters after a motion on the matter was accepted by the House, said MPs can revise the details of their declarations with the speaker if there is an increase in their wealth over the course of two years.

He added that MPs have no reason to worry about the requirement.

“It’s just an asset declaration. No investigation will be conducted, unless there is a complaint, in which case, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission would be involved.

“Otherwise, there is no reason for them to be concerned,” he said when asked about the opposition’s objection to the motion.

Parliament today adopted the motion, which makes it compulsory for all legislators to declare their wealth, despite opposition MPs’ vociferous rhetoric against it.

Liew said all MPs, their spouses and children below 21, and trustees have three months to declare their assets to the speaker.

“If they don’t make a declaration within this time frame, the speaker can move a motion to refer them to the rights and privileges committee for disciplinary action.”

He said both government and opposition lawmakers should extend cooperation on the matter.

“They have responsibilities. They have been given the trust to carry out their duties, and it is important for the people who chose them as parliamentarians.

“It will be transparent. They can declare their assets’ worth from the time they were elected up till the end of their tenure.

“This way, the people can see if their assets increased or decreased,” said the Batu Sapi MP. – July 1, 2019.
