INSPECTOR-GENERAL of Police Khalid Abu Bakar today denied that police were withholding information from lawyers representing the two accused in the murder of Kim Jong-Nam.
“It is impossible because we always cooperate with counsel in terms of providing documents to them,” Khalid said in Putrajaya today.
However, Khalid said any request by counsel for documents should be through an official request, adding that it will be up to the police and attorney-general on what information could be released.
Khalid was responding to the complaint made by lawyer Gooi Soon Seng earlier today who said their request to police to obtain closed-circuit television camera footage prior to Kim’s murder at klia 2, was met with silence.
Gooi said the request was made five times, by hand as well as fax.
“We will not single out this case and say we are not going to cooperate. No, there must be a communication breakdown somewhere,” Khalid said.
Indonesian Siti Aishah, 25, and Vietnamese Doan Thi Huong, 28, were charged on March 1, together with four others still at large, with the murder of Kim on February 13.
Kim was killed using a potent chemical weapon identified as VX agent. Kim died while being taken in an ambulance to a nearby hospital.
Both accused were taken to the Sepang Sessions Court this morning where the judge was supposed to decide on the next date for the case to be transferred to Shah Alam High Court.
It, however, had to be postponed as the documents were incomplete. Judge Harith Sham Mohames Yasin has set May 30 for re-mention.
Gooi, who is appearing for Siti Aishah, had also said Putrajaya’s decision to send three North Koreans home in exchange for the nine Malaysians in Pyongyang had jeopardised their defence.
Gooi also wanted police to release the statements taken from three North Koreans prior to their release on March 30.
Khalid told the lawyer that police are not politicians and sending the North Korean homes and the murder investigations were two separate things.
“They can say anything they like. What is wrong with the lawyers? Why are they accusing us like that? What is the connection? We are not politicians. We are investigating a murder case,” he said.
He said Malaysian police are waiting for the North Korean authorities to arrest the four North Koreans wanted for the murder of Kim and send them here to face the law. – April 13, 2017.
