JELI MP Mustapa Mohamed was among the biggest beneficiaries in terms of allocations and projects when he was still with Umno and when Barisan Nasional was still in power, said Najib Razak today.
The former prime minister rued the fact that Mustapa – better known as Tok Pa – decided to jump ship to join Bersatu when Umno was down after the defeat of BN in the last general election.
He admitted that Tok Pa was among his favourites in the party and he had freely granted funding and project requests from the Kelantan politician.
“He was among the leaders and ministers who submitted many request letters to me.
“Love letter, letters seeking projects, asking for tenders and all, and I had approved so many of them… all for the people of Jeli and Kelantan,” he said today while officiating Jeli Umno division meeting.
Last week, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission revealed a list of 41 individuals and entities who were facing civil forfeiture move to recover monies allegedly from 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).
Among the entities listed was Kelantan Umno which was headed by Mustapa during the period.
Umno supreme council member Bung Mokhtar Radin had then questioned why Mustapa’s name was not in the list of 41 individuals and entities.
Speaking further at the Jeli event, Najib said he was disappointed with Mustapa’s decision to quit Umno and join Bersatu.
He said Mustapa had forgotten that it was because of Umno that he had been a minister as well as state Umno chief.
“But look at how he repaid us. He just jumped ship in the middle of the night. Didn’t even tell us anything.
“No indications at all. I myself only knew about his defection through media reports. Tok Pa deserted us in the middle of the night,” he said.
However, he said Mustapa’s defection had no impact on the party in Jeli and Kelantan. – June 28, 2019.
