Putrajaya wants all MPs to declare assets

PUTRAJAYA will table a motion in the Dewan Rakyat to make it compulsory for all MPs, including those in the opposition, to declare their assets, said Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

He said this will ensure that MPs would not abuse their positions to enrich themselves.

“That is fair. Everyone must declare their assets including the opposition, which also has the power to influence the decision-making process.

“We will table the motion at the meeting. Whether it is accepted or not is another matter,” he said after officiating at a Marvel Studios event in the capital this evening.

Parliament will meet on Monday until July 18.

The Malaysian Insight is informed Minister in the Prime Minister’s department V. K.Liew will table the motion on Monday.

The motion is expected to carry as it requires only a simple majority to pass.

Segamat Dr Edmund R. Santhara Kumar is currently the wealthiest MP, according to the declaration of assets filings on the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) website at mydeclaration.sprm.gov.my.

Santhara and his wife own RM132 million in assets, and Beruas MP Ngeh Koo Ham is second richest with RM 77 million. Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad is third with accumulated assets of RM32 million

To date, 121, or 93.8%, of parliamentary members and 78, or 88.4%, of administrative members in the government have declared their assets. – June 27, 2019.
