ANWAR Ibrahim and Dr Mahathir Mohamad met at the Prime Minister’s Office in Putrajaya this evening where they had a brief discussion on several current issues, including on handling economic affairs.

The meeting came just shortly after Anwar said earlier that he would be meeting Dr Mahathir to speak about the latter’s comment that he would not serve more than three years as prime minister.

However, writing on his Facebook page after the meeting, Anwar did not mention any specific discussion on the power handover to him.

“Met Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in Putrajaya today.

“We touched briefly on several current local and international issues.

“In the meeting we also agreed that the country’s leadership must be quick and efficient in handling economic issues, including to increase local and foreign investments,” said the PKR president.

Earlier at another event in Putrajaya, Anwar said that he would seek clarification from Dr Mahathir on his latest remarks that he would not stay in power beyond three years.

“I am meeting the prime minister shortly. I will, of course, seek a clarification from him.

“On a serious note, there is absolutely no problem, in so far as a transition is concerned. Prime Minister Mahathir and I continue to meet on a weekly basis and the transition is not an issue. Period,” Anwar told reporters.

He also said the exact date of the transition has not been set.

Asked how he would feel it Dr Mahathir stayed in power for three years, Anwar said: “Those are conjectures. Assumptions.”

Questions over Anwar’s takeover arose this morning after Dr Mahathir was quoted by CNBC news as saying he will not stay beyond three years as prime minister.

Pakatan Harapan component parties have agreed that Anwar would take over as prime minister two years after the coalition took power in the 14th general election. – June 24, 2019.

  • Anwar was so bent on getting a clarification from the PM on the comment about not serving more than 3 years... so what happened... in his Facebook AFTER THE MEETING WITH PM, all he said was we discussed current issues!!!!!
Looks like Anwar didnt have his way after all. Perhaps, thats a sign that he may also not have his way in becoming the next PM?! Some room for thought..
