Can India guarantee Zakir Naik fair treatment, questions PM

INDIA must first assure Putrajaya that controversial Muslim preacher Zakir Naik will receive just treatment before the government decides whether to send him back, said Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

“Before we accept an extradition request (from India), we need to know what will happen to the person who is to be extradited.

“We have a prisoner (Sirul Azhar Umar) who fled to Australia. We asked Australia to send him back, but Australia said he would be hanged if sent back. So, Australia has disagreed to do so until now.

“So, we are also entitled to determine if the person we send back would be given fair justice as well,” he said in Malacca today.

Former policeman Sirul, alongside Azilah Hadri, had been convicted of the murder of Mongolian Altantuya Shaariibuu in Malaysia but Sirul had fled to Australia during his appeal process.

He fled the country after the Court of Appeal acquitted him. He was also away when the Federal Court overturned the decision and upheld his and Azilah’s conviction and death sentence.

He is now being held at an immigration detention centre in Melbourne.

Malaysia’s request for him to be sent back has been rejected by Australia as the country does not back capital punishment. It said it would only sent Sirul back if Malaysia could assure that he would not face the death penalty.

Local media in India had reported that the country’s Enforcement Directorate (ED) is set to secure an arrest warrant against Zakir and others in an ongoing trial heard by a special court in Mumbai under its Prevention of Money Laundering Act 2002.

According to reports, the Mumbai court would decide whether a non-bailable warrant of arrest should be issued against Zakir at its next hearing on June 19.

The ED will then request an Interpol red notice against the Indian-born preacher, as well as extradition from Malaysia after obtaining a non-bailable warrant from the court.

  • India has its own laws to follow and why do you question India for this FUGITIVE? You are a man of rules after GE14 as claimed soon the New Government was formed although you had your own set of rules when you were PM!. Likewise India too has set of rules. Did you watch some of the recordings of this fugitive how much of hatred he has on other religions? I wish those who have those recordings release for public view now. Your comparison with Sairul is most degrading comparison because they are not the same convictions. You talk rule of law you your yourself is contradicting when coming to this sort of issues just because you want to cover this fugitive for reasons very biased on your part. It's difficult to understand your government.

  • Mahatir you have chosen to be bias in your judgement. In this instance you are not rationale in your thoughts. Please do not be swayed by religion in your political prowess. Not all Muslim are good man and neither is all non muslim also a good man. Sirul is a hard core criminal and a killer and that is why Malaysia as per rule of law has convicted him to be hung. Zakir naik is only wanted in India for hate specch incitement and money laundering which will not see him at the gallows except for long jail terms. You are not in position to question India and their sets of rule and neither can you demand a guarantee out of respect from another country on their sovereignty to act on their judicial procedure to convict their criminals. Both sirul and zakir naik are miles apart to compare. Would you like China to tell you off that unless you ensure Jho Lo safety and a just trial only then will they send him back. You can tell us that you have it to done soon but we the rakayt are not stupid as we know about the leverage that is being used for that "bater trading". India will be coming soon in your same play act and definitely there will be some kind of bargaining with leverage where you will sheepishly send back Zakir Naik and that will make you look stupid thinking that you are tough and a good negotiator. Stay true to yourself as time are short for you and do what is appropriate rather than the conniving politics which are out of place in your age. Do it well and ride out proudly to the sunset to meet your makers without fear for knowing that the wrong are amended. Honestly with your nonagenarian status you should never ever let a parasites like Zakir Naik takes you for a ride. Yes we are not bothered by UmnoPAS leaders or silly Muftis "cohabiting" with Zakir Naik in reducing the importance of humanity and humility taught in Islam but when devious hate speeches to create unrest and mayhem are just denigrating the sanctity of Islam . No we as rakyat would be disappointed and even dishearten to see our great PM brought down to the level all in the guise of religion. You are too smart for that !!!! Stay safe and stay smart.!!!!
