LATHEEFA Koya’s appointment as the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief raises questions as to whether she will be impartial and unbiased, said MCA president Wee Ka Siong
Wee also described Latheefa as a “loose cannon” that may prove a liability to the Pakatan Harapan (PH) leadership.
“Privately, PKR leaders regard Latheefa as a loose cannon. One cannot help but wonder if she is a suitable choice for the role.
“I hope we will see some sense of impartiality on her part in this highly questionable appointment,” he said.
Wee described her appointment as “mind boggling” and runs counter the promise made by PH to ensure that a professional MACC personnel would head the commission.
“Even though Latheefa has announced her resignation from PKR to take up the post, the independence of the MACC now in question.
“Where is the impartiality, integrity and credibility of the MACC now? The image of the MACC is now in tatters and any right-minded person would not condone her appointment, including even the PKR leadership,” he said.
Wee said a successor from within MACC should have succeeded former MACC chief Mohd Shukri Abdull.
“(It) is thus now the worst Hari Raya present for Malaysia, especially among the MACC rank and file.”
Latheefa, 46, replaced Shukri, who requested that his contract be shortened from its full tenure, which was supposed to end on May 17 next year.
She is the first woman chief of MACC, and the first person without an enforcement background to lead the anti-graft agency. – June 4, 2019.
