MISSING activist Peter Chong Fook Meng was seen crossing over to Thailand via the Bukit Kayu Hitam border on April 7, said Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar.

Khalid said today police have evidence in the form of photograph and information from the Immigration checkpoint to support the claim.

Chong crossed the border at 6.30am and had travelled there by bus. It was unclear, however, if Chong was alone or travelling with a companion.

“I don’t know what is his intention in going missing,” said Khalid.

He added that Chong might have run away because of debt. Chong was a former Petaling Jaya municipal councillor and assistant to Subang MP Sivarasa Rasiah.

Sivarasa and his PKR colleague, Elizabeth Wong, said in a statement Chong’s Facebook Messenger was active over the weekend up to yesterday.

Khalid also warned “various parties” not to confuse the public over Chong’s disappearance.

“He is abroad. We do not know what was his reason,” said Khalid. He said Malaysia is working with its Thailand counterparts to trace Chong’s whereabouts.

“He is still there, as (there is) no record showing that he has returned.”

Khalid urged Chong to contact his family.

“I hope he contacts his family, telling them that he is healthy and the reason he fled abroad.”

He also said Chong faced action if there is evidence to show that he had disappeared intentionally.

Chong left his condominium in Persiaran Raja Chulan on Wednesday to meet a friend for a drink but failed to return home.

His disappearance sparked great concern, as it happened barely two months after the abduction of Pastor Raymond Koh in Petaling Jaya.

Koh was abducted along Jalan SS4B/10 in Petaling Jaya by about 15 men in three SUVs.

In addressing public concern over the case of missing persons highlighted by a few organisations and other parties, Khalid said police were also concern about them.

“I saw few parties, including the Bar Council, were concerned about the missing people. They were not the only ones. We, too, are concerned.”

Khalid earlier disputed viral social media messages saying there were four abduction case, saying there was only one abduction case – Koh’s.

“Out of the five said to have been abducted, only one was with proof. That person is Pastor Koh.”

Between 2011 and 2015, 13,290 people were reported missing. Police have solved 8,017 cases so far. – April 12, 2017.
