Historian Dr Khoo Kay Kim died as he had always lived, 'with the greatest dignity', say his family. – May 28, 2019.

PROMINENT historian Dr Khoo Kay Kim died after a brief illness this morning, said his family.

Khoo, 82, who was emeritus professor in the History Department at Universiti Malaya, died at Hospital University Malaya Medical Centre about 10am this morning.

“It is with the deepest sadness that we inform of the passing of our much loved husband and father Dr Khoo Kay Kim following a brief illness. He passed, as he had always lived, with the greatest dignity,” his family said.

Khoo was born in Kampar, Perak, on March 28, 1937, and leaves behind three children – Eddin, Rubin and Mavin.

He graduated from UM in 1959 and obtained his PhD in 1974 with his thesis entitled The Beginnings of Political Extremism in Malaya (1915-1935).

In an interview, Khoo had, however, admitted that had history not intervened, he might have been a footballer.

Khoo had said he would have been content with a simple job as long as he could have gone on playing football competitively, even though there was no money in the sport back in the 1950s.

After independence, however, he had said uncertainty about the future led him to opt for university instead.

Following the May 13, 1969, racial riots, Khoo had been roped in to draft the Rukun Negara.

In 2017, Khoo released a memoir entitled I, KKK, in which he documented his life growing up in Malaya through the Japanese occupation till now. – May 28, 2019.
