THE Primary Six textbook for Moral Studies must be corrected to indicate that the first Rukun Negara, Belief in God, is meant for all faiths and not just Islam, said Chandra Muzaffar.
The social activist and political analyst was reported as saying in Free MalaysiaToday that the textbook has wrongly interpreted the essence of the principle, and urged Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik to make the changes.
“It will be very sad if the textbook is not corrected,” he said.
He was responding to recent reports about a mid-term examination paper at a primary school in Shah Alam where students were told to correctly identify the meanings of the five principles.
Controversy arose when the meaning for the Belief in God principle was stated as “to accept Islam as the official religion of the federation”.
Many parents have criticised this answer, saying that it did not correctly reflect the meaning of the Rukun Negara.
The headmaster of the school was then reported as saying that the examination paper was in line with a government-issued “Pendidikan Moral” textbook printed in 2015.
Chandra disagreed with the interpretation in the textbook, saying that it gave the impression that “Belief in God in the Rukun Negara means accepting Islam as the official religion of the federation”.
“Rukun Negara is meant to be inclusive of all faiths be it Christians, Hindus, Buddhists, Sikhs and other faiths. It is not meant for a particular faith,” he said. – May 26, 2019.
