Maszlee the first failure of ‘Shared Prosperity’

Wong Ang Peng

The sooner Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik is conscious of merits and applies them in his ministry, the sooner there will be true transformation into a better education system. – The Malaysian Insight file pic, May 23, 2019.

EDUCATION Minister Dr Maszlee Malik’s remark linking the continuation of the matriculation quota to the low private sector employment of Bumiputeras is a first casualty to the prime minister’s recent announcement on “Shared Prosperity”. Private corporations put their money in their mouths. What politicians spill is often hot air giving meaning to rhetoric that is accustomed in the profession.

While a person’s capabilities, character and language proficiency – including to some extent the Mandarin language – are all realistic, market-driven and time-tested demands of the private sector, policies on matriculation and its ethnic quota system are erratic, changeable and determined by the whims of politicians. Linking the two, like mixing oil and water, shows naivety, insincerity and non-conformance to the voices of change that swept the last general election, and even exudes racism on the part of Maszlee.

  • About time that Tun should educate Maszlee on the importance of merits as his priority if he is adamant in maintaining Maszlee as MOE.

  • *When South Africa got independence from white rulers in 1990 under the leadership of Nelson Mandela, his supporters, mainly African Tribes, demanded Reservations in education sector, govt sector & in private sector!*

*Nelson Mandela replied that he will not allow any type of Reservations in any sector i.e. in education sector, in govt sector & in private sector at any cost, because Reservations & the products of Reservations will destroy the whole nation!*

*The famous statement of Nelson Mandela is displayed at the entrance of the University of South Africa thus:*

*"Destroying any nation does not require the use of atomic bombs or the use of long range missiles. _It only requires lowering the quality of education and allowing cheating in the examinations by the students._"*

*Patients die at the hands of such quack doctors.*

*Buildings collapse at the hands of such dubious engineers.*

*Money is lost in the hands of such bankers, economists & accountants.*

*Humanity dies at the hands of such pseudo religious scholars.*

*Justice is lost at the hands of such corrupt judges...*

*"The collapse of education is the collapse of a nation."*...

  • "Nothing is visible on the efforts taken to erase such perceptions." ... Perhaps that is the truth, as admitted by TDM himself. It is a back door for under performers to enter university.

    • Do you know that non-Malays are paying the bulk of the country taxes which pays the salaries of our civil servants and government agencies of whom 90% are staffed by Malays? And what do we get? Poor standards in public education from primary schools to universities - creating unemployable graduates and will need more tongkats from the government while continue to pay more to get our children into private universities that trained to be employable. On top of all this we still need to pay 7% more when we buy properties, etc. Just look at all all the Malay run agencies - FELDA, Tabung Haji, KWAP, YAPEIM, etc. - tell me who are the ones plundering and stealing the funds? So who exactly is sharing and who is stealing? It is obvious, isnt it. Shame on you, Malay buggers like you.

    • Don't feed the troll and make it a line split between races. Just ignore the remark and move on.

  • Come to think of it, I would lay the blame on PM Mahatir. It was thru him and Anwar that the start of Malay Agenda and the Ketuanan takes shape and incepted into the education system. Right now it is again Mahatir who is placed on the pedestal to be a PM . So it is basically up to him to correct the wrong. Maybe he is still sulking on being turned down to be the Education Minister that he so desired to do so . Knowing his Machevillian style of punishment , he is going full steam ahead to let the rakyat feel his hurt and will only take notice when he is begged to do so.

They are many among us sensible Malays who aspire to have a fair and equal Malaysia and are fighting for it. You tarred all of them with the same brush. Are you a racist? Shame on you too!

  • Well said Dr Wong. Looking to the day when NGOs are given fair hearing.
NGOs can be as valuable as ideas people as the private sector is to building economic muscle.

  • When Maszlee announced the increase in the number of Matriculation places from 25,000 to 40,000, he presented it as a HUGE 1,500 increase in places for non-Malays; not realising that it was a humongous increase of 13,500 for Malays in the dubious back-door entry to tertiary education ... and probably a corresponding decrease in the number of places available for people who go via the traditional (but more difficult) STPM route.

Mediocrity knows no bound. What a silly billy for a Minister. Dr M must have really scraped the bottom of the Bersatu barrel.

  • Nelson Mandela's quote is superbly sharp as to destroy a country, just lowering down the education and it can screw up almost everything. Reservation of places seems pushing talents away but at the same time, the ministry needs to managing over certain rights. Quite a challenge in managing both parties' interest.
