MCA president Liow Tiong Lai is being roasted on social media over his statement that it is acceptable for City Hall to block the Better Beer Festival due to “security concerns”.

Liow yesterday said he accepted and respected the decision after he was informed by Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor that it was based on issues of security.

That has not gone down well with social media users who said Liow’s compliance would do him and his party no favours in the next general election.

In the Facebook comments section, Lee Tai Wah wrote: “This will be bad for MCA in the coming election.”

Don Don posted his agreement with: “Guess you won’t be getting much votes coming GE (sic)”.

“MCA MCA…that’s why all the Chinese hate you…,” said Terence Tan.

Another user Kent Tyhv wrote, “that is y the Chinese community rejects MCA”.

Liow was reported to have said that it would have been unacceptable if City Hall had blocked the event due to political or religious sensitivities,.

“But if it is a question of security, this is something I cannot get upset about,” Liow said.

Others attacked Liow’s seeming lack of principle in the issue.

“This self-serving and unprincipled minister lacks the courage to stand up and fight for what is right. So predictable,” wrote user Azlan Che Mak.

User Memori Melaka even threw shade at Liow’s appearance in Pete Teo and Liew Seng Tat’s short film, “Citizens”.

“What a lame excuse for a Minister? I think he better go back to acting in cheap YouTube videos.”

Harold Fernandez wonders what else will be banned next.

“I guess next year Liow wld agree to CNY celebrations being banned for safety reasons too….”

The Better Beer Festival 2017, which was slated to be held on October 6 and 7, was cancelled after City Hall rejected the organiser’s application for a permit to hold the event.

In a statement announcing the cancellation, organisers Mybeer (M) Sdn Bhd said, “We were further informed that the decision was made due to the political sensitivities surrounding the event.

Other users were not convinced that security was the reason for the block, and wondered at Liow’s ready acceptance of it.

On Facebook, Henrik Baumann wrote, “You are there just to fill up the empty space. Just say no comment at least not so bad. Keselamatan konon.”

On Twitter, Mahendra Kaniapan (@Mahenka101) said, “Betul lah tu…” (Yeah right.) – September 21, 2017.

  • He should take a walk down Changkat Bukit Bintang at night with PAS and TA and there is a beer festival every night causing jam and nightmares for residents there. That should be the vice centre of KL and definately not in the proposed venue of Publika.
If he really cannot comprehend it, then he should really take a walk and nobody will miss him.
