PUBLIC perception on the Malays will be shaped based on how Umno acts, so the party should be mindful of its deeds and actions, said party deputy president Mohamad Hasan.

He said the nation is curious to see how the perception of the Malays on politics and social aspects has changed following the party’s defeat in the 14th general election.

On that note, he said the largest Malay-Muslim party should be careful of its actions.

“Any missteps from Umno will have a ripple effect on the Malays. Umno is not only a political party but also reflects the spiritual image of the Malay community.”

Speaking at the party’s 73rd anniversary celebration, Mohamad said Umno will not stop serving the country, the Malays and Muslim community despite losing power.

Mohamad has assumed the duties of party president at the interim after the party’s chief Ahmad Zahid Hamidi went on leave in December.

He also urged members to refrain from having a negative perception on the party and saying that it has met with its downfall.

He said this is because Umno was birthed out of a good cause and ideology which is nation building and creating a harmonious society.

“With that I am thankful for (your) loyalty to Umno at times of strength and weakness.”

Regardless of whether it is in power or not, Umno will continue to ensure that Islam’s position and Malay rights are taken care of, he added.

The Rantau assemblyman urged Umno leaders and members to strive in the spirit of nationalism in line with Islamic teaching, as laid down in the Umno-PAS agenda.

“It is time to breathe fresh air into this matter. Members of Umno and PAS have ties. However, political ego had kept us apart for a long time.

“We have to do away with such narratives and build a collaboration based on our own way of Malay-Muslim politics.

“It’s been 70 years since Umno stood guard of our race. It’s time those values, characteristics and thoughts are propelled to new heights in Malay politics,” he said. – May 11, 2019.

  • Whether Malays,Chinese,Indian or any other race, if all live on govt handouts, the country economy, education, sports and every other fields will go down to earth. That was what happened for the past 60 years. Everybody has to work hard in order to make the nation productive. No other ways to build a progressive society. UmNo asked u to live lazily, to steal to riches, to abuse to earn, to short cut for money. Malay society will be self destructing.

  • Do you notice that the fall of MCA in GE14 did not affect the image of the Chinese? This is because Chinese adopts a universal approach in supporting the right people and not any one particular party.
It is high time the Malays too should move away from communal politics. That's the way to move forward.
