PKR Youth has demanded that PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan retract his remark that Anwar Ibrahim is unfit to become prime minister because of past conviction.
Branding the PAS leader’s remarks as rude and ill-intentioned, PKR Youth chief Akmal Nasir said Takiyuddin had crossed the line.
“Takiyuddin calls himself a lawyer but it is clear that he fails to understand the law,” Akmal said in a statement.
“It is clear that Takiyuddin has ill intentions to humiliate Anwar.
He has also indirectly belittled the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, who had granted a full pardon to Anwar.”
On May 16, last year, the then Agong Sultan Muhammad V of Kelantan pardoned Anwar, who was jailed after being found guilty of sodomy.
Anwar was serving a five-year jail sentence since February 2015 after the Federal Court upheld his conviction and sentence on a charge of sodomising former aide Saiful Bukhari Azlan.
Akmal said with the royal pardon, Anwar is no longer a convict.
“This also means that Anwar did not have to wait for five years after his release to stand for elections as Article 48 of the federal constitution does not apply in his case.
Article 48 states that a person convicted and sentenced to at least a year’s jail or a fine of not less than RM2,000 and has not received a pardon—will be disqualified from being a member of parliament.
Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng also roasted Takiyuddin for his remarks.
