Matriculation intake increase a compromise, says Perak DAP chief

Putrajaya has announced an increase in the matriculation intake from 25,000 seats a year to 40,000, while retaining the racial quota of 90% Bumiputera students and 10% non-Bumis. – The Malaysian Insight file pic, May 10, 2019.

PUTRAJAYA’S decision to increase the number of matriculation seats is a compromise following the faulty policy implemented by the previous administration, said the Perak DAP chairman.

Nga Kor Ming described as “pathetic” the Barisan Nasional system to have 90% of seats allocated for Bumiputera students, with the remaining 10% for non-Bumiputeras, but said Pakatan Harapan cannot immediately do away with it.

“The Education Ministry’s objective is to create a meritocracy-based system. That is what we should be doing.

“Awarding seats based on one’s skin colour is a bad policy. We should judge students on their abilities and needs instead,” he told The Malaysian Insight.

He said the federal government’s recent announcement on increasing the matriculation intake from 25,000 seats a year to 40,000, while retaining the racial quota, is the best compromise, considering the current political situation.

“The PH government is merely continuing the policy of the previous government. PH just lost three by-elections in a row. If you want to abolish the matriculation quota now, Umno and PAS will definitely exploit the issue, and MCA will take the opportunity to fan the flames among the Chinese community.”

The opposition is being “very irresponsible” by criticising the decision, which was made to address the limited number of matriculation seats for non-Bumiputeras, he said.

Perak DAP chairman Nga Kor Ming says if Pakatan Harapan were to immediately abolish the matriculation quota set by BN, 'Umno and PAS will definitely exploit the issue'. – The Malaysian Insight file pic, May 10, 2019.

“The decision was obviously a compromise. The quota of having 90% seats reserved for Bumiputeras, and the remaining 10% for non-Bumiputeras, is a policy of the previous government.

“At that time, there were 25,000 seats, with non-Bumiputeras given only 2,500. Indians were given 2,200 out of that, and only 300 were given to Chinese students. Is that not pathetic?

“There were only 2,500 seats for non-Bumiputeras, and this prompted a backlash from the Indian community, so they were given 2,200 seats.

“Anyone can criticise (the government), but Umno and MCA should keep their mouths shut because it’s all just a political show.”

Nga added that for the country to advance, it must “abandon the old way of doing things” and move towards needs- and merit-based policies.

Asked if PH is focusing on Bumiputeras, following surveys that show a dip in the pact’s popularity among the community, the Teluk Intan MP said the government is prioritising the economy and Malaysians as a whole.

“We need to abandon old policies, and must be guided by sound education and economic policies.

“We are Malaysians, and we need to act like Malaysians.” – May 10, 2019.

  • Why increase the intake to 40,000 and maintain the quota? Why not just increase the intake for non-bumis by say 500. This will retain the number of Malay students at 22,500 so there is no loss to them. This would be a win-win for the under achievers who need a backdoor into university. The Malays would not have to give up anything and an increase of 500 will not be a big a shock to the system as 15,000.

Someone told me that as an employer, he would not hire fresh grads who got into university via the matriculation route. Not because they were mostly Malays but because he has doubts about their ability to work as they needed a backdoor to get into uni. Who is to tell if they had more backdoors opesed f

Who is to tell if they can only make it through their careers with back doors. Would you rather hire those who soared like an eagle or a bunch of turkeys?

  • Nga you full of shits !!! You your ownself has condemed the hugh quotas of 90% as pathetic and why are you indirectly asking rakyat to be tolerant and be opened to the ideas for fear of both Umno and MCA fanning up the issues. The Next GE15 is years away and why should PH be held ransom to such unwarranted fear?????? MCA will drive themselves to self destructions if they play on this issues. Infact in this concerns MCA is out of the equation. Most of the Malays are now very open to be competitive and Umno harping on such concern to be their main Malay Agenda will not have full tractions. The Malay race knows that 90% allocation in such devious strategy to deny others are very unIslamic. It makes them shamefull of their culture and the dastardly act of selfishness will not allow them to seek solace in their spiritual uplifting. Looks like the Malay PH ministers especially the PM and the Education Ministers are in cohort to perpetuate such racist agenda. Cleverly putting on a false fronts and many excuses not to have the convictions and to righteously make the change. Very disappointing !!!!!!. Coupled to that we have the other non Malays Minister who are "balless" in making a virtuous stance that such quota allocations are a thing of the past. PH has taken over the government and not always falling back on excuses that the previous regime has caused the concerns. In fact PH Ministers are very meek and have yet to show cohesiveness in thoughts to battle against the onslaughts UmnoPAS false accusation and fanning of racial conflicts. A total failure !!!!!!. If this is not work out Sandakan will be the last by elections won by PH. Here at this juncture majority of the rakyat are talking as Malaysian and it is only UmnoPAS that is still talking in the old obsolete system of communal form for they are bankrupt of ideas to reform and it is in their blood not to reform. PH won GE14 is not just solely of Najib and his 1MDB but the overall frustrations and hopelessness in rakyat that somehow was rejuvenated by the culmination on the will and ideas to make further change from the last GE13 in 2008. Get the facts right !!! Satistically on UmnoPAS membership vs rakyat population in electroral votes. It is no brainer that they do not have the upper hand on that. To influence and convince the Malays to their UmnoPAS Malay agenda are just mere words as they now do not have any tangible means and program in place .The Malay race are not that too stupid to see and feel the miseries that has befallen on their own iconic Malay institution especialy FELDA , TH , KWAP, Disposed Army Land grab and what ever Umno could lay their hands on to it. PH to the rescue , mindfully it is not in hundreds of millions but billions, tell me that PH are so stupid in not emblazoning their white knight drama especially to the Malay race rather than the least worries about offending the 90 % quotas. All these are PH armoury of ammunitions to be hero.. Harping on such a trivial 90% and the fear of repisal is unfounded Looks like there is no reslove to make changes in PH and meanwhile permiting a contrary view to still support and continue such a racist defeated Umno programn. Please Nga do a much more convincing explanation!!!!!!
