FORMER Goldman Sachs banker Roger Ng Chong Hwa has been extradited to the US, said newly minted Inspector-General of Police Abdul Hamid Bador.

The top cop, however, did not divulge further details of the extradition process which was believed to have taken place last Friday.

The Edge Markets reported today that Ng was sent to the US to face charges over 1Malaysia Development Bhd-related offences.

A source from the Commercial Crime Investigation Department informed The Malaysian Insight that Ng was sent as part of the deal brokered between Malaysia and the US Department of Justice (DoJ).

The source added that Ng himself had agreed to defend his case at the Court for Eastern District of New York, US.

“The deal was worked out between Malaysia and the DoJ. However, I am not in the position to reveal the information.

“Ng himself agreed to defend the case in the US,” the source said.

On December 19 last year, Ng was charged in the Sessions Court with four counts of abetting Goldman Sachs pertaining to the sale of guaranteed notes and bonds belonging to a 1MDB subsidiary amounting to US$6.5 billion (RM27 billion) by omitting material facts and making false statements.

Ng pleaded not guilty to all charges.

According to Bernama news agency, on October 23, last year, the prosecution received a request from the US government for a provisional warrant of arrest against Ng.

Following the arrest warrant, Ng was detained by Malaysian police in November 2018 and was subsequently remanded for 60 days pending hearing of the government’s application to extradite Ng.

Ng filed an application to be released on bail pending hearing of the extradition proceedings but his application was dismissed by the high court on December 13.

On February 15, this year, Ng willingly agreed to be extradited to the US to face the three criminal charges and he applied to the Sessions Court to waive the extradition proceedings against him. – May 6, 2019.
