AN associate of controversial Islamic preacher Zakir Naik could be charged as early as Thursday for allegedly insulting Hindu gods, said an activist today.

While the police are not ready to confirm as to when Muhammad Zamri Vinoth Kalimuthu, 35, will be charged, civil society group Agamam Ani Malaysia’s Arun Dorasamy said court action will be taken tomorrow.

He told The Malaysian Insight the police have informed that Zamri will be charged at the Jalan Duta Court complex in Kuala Lumpur.

“The case is now handled by Bukit Aman and we are informed that he is expected to be produced to court tomorrow.”

Muhammad Zamri was arrested on Sunday after more than 800 police reports were lodged against him.

He is being investigated under the Section 298A of the Penal Code as well as Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for disrupting harmony and transmitting offensive communications.

He allegedly insulted Hinduism during a religious lecture. A Kelantanese organisation called Info Sunnah released the video of his speech on social media.

When contacted, acting Bukit Aman Crime Investigating Department director Huzir Mohamed said the police are waiting for the nod from the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) to file charges against Muhammad Zamri.

“Investigation papers must be submitted to the AGC first. If there is a case, he will be charged.”

Muhammad Zamri, who also heads the Muslim propagation organisation One Centre Malaysia, was arrested by Kangar serious crime unit and brought to Bukit Aman to be remanded for four days.

His remand expires tomorrow.

It was reported that Muhammad Zamri had previously been investigated for three crimes, two being serious offences.

He was previously detained for voluntarily causing hurt, rape and criminal breach of trust. – May 1, 2019
