ACTIVIST Numan Afifi was questioned by Bukit Aman this morning over a statement that he read at the United Nations Human Rights Council last March.

Speaking to The Malaysian Insight, Numan said he is being investigated under the Sedition Act.

However, Numan said most of the questions asked were about a speech made by another speaker.

“I was called up today in regards to a speech I gave during the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) process with regard to issues related to sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and sexual characteristics.

“But the cops were asking question about someone else’s speech which I do not personally know. I don’t even know his name and yet the cops are probing me under the Sedition Act.

“This is ridiculous. They only ask why I was there in the background, did I give a speech which I said yes, but they are interested in that foreign guy,” Numan shrugged.

Numan later explained that the speech he gave was a collective statement from civil societies in Malaysia and he was representing The International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association (ILGA).

Numan was accompanied by lawyer Honey Tan.

Local civil rights group have recently condemned the police investigation against Numan in a statement.

The statement signed by four rights groups said there was absolutely nothing in Numan’s speech that could warrant any investigation by the authorities.

The statement said that the probe was a clear breach of the freedom of expression guaranteed in Article 10 of the federal constitution and an act of intimidation by the authorities towards a marginalised and vulnerable group of persons. – April 26, 2019.
