Cabinet to discuss concerns over matriculation programme

EDUCATION Minister Maszlee Malik will bring up current concerns over admission into the matriculation programme with the Cabinet on Wednesday.

Education director-general Amin Senin in a statement today said the ministry has taken a serious view of the issues that are raised regarding admission into the programme.

“Taking into consideration the views of all parties, the ministry will ensure that these issues are dealt with carefully in finding the best solution through the proper channels.”

He added that based on the requirements, the ministry will stick to its original policy of allocating 90% of admissions for Bumiputera and the rest for non-Bumiputera students.

“This year, while improvements have been made, the 90:10 policy will still be maintained. It will provide opportunities for 60% of students from low-income (B40) families.”

He added that the ministry had revisited all proposals including the proposed increase in quota allocation for non-Bumiputera.

The annual student intake for the matriculation programme is 25,000 of which 2,500 seats are allocated for non-Bumiputera students.

“This programme was originally created only for Bumiputera students.”

Maszlee in a statement last Friday said the 2,200 and 1,000 seats allocated for Indian and Chinese students in the programme last year was a “one-off initiative”.

It is also based on current needs and involved seats allocated under the Bumiputera quota that had not been filled. – Bernama, April 21, 2019

  • Matriculation is basically an easier way to tertiary education without the need for STPM. Its like a foundation programme but easier to fulfil or comply with..

  • First of all why must it be 90 : 10??? The nons are the one paying heavy on taxation. Why can't the ratio by population volume be the guide line. Malays at 63% and the nons at a total of 37%. Why the lopsided racial segregation and intimidation on education. Stop that nonscences so that unity could prevail.
