MALAYSIA will be a developed nation only when its physical progress is in tandem with environmental preservation, said Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

The prime minister said protecting the environment is a collective responsibility.

“In conjunction with Earth Day today, we should collectively protect Mother Nature, and must not forget how important it is for our future generation.

“We have seen endless destruction as a result of uncontrolled development, which is only for profit. We have to realise that our goal of being a developed country will not become a reality if our rivers are dirty and our forests left to die,” he said at an Earth Day programme at Taman Tugu Negara in Kuala Lumpur this morning.

The 26.7ha Taman Tugu Negara, which features a jungle trail, was recently opened to the public.

Some 30,000 visitors have been to the park.

Before ending his speech, Dr Mahathir said he is confident that the younger generation will protect the environment.

“With today’s attendance, especially from the younger generation, I am confident, and we are confident, that our efforts to preserve Mother Nature will succeed.

“Therefore, I believe that Taman Tugu and our national parks will last forever.” – April 20, 2019.
