THE government is waiting for approval from the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong and Conference of Rulers on the government’s choice for the new chief justice post, said Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

“There is a (constitutional) provision for the appointment to be submitted to the Conference of Rulers and not just to the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong,” he said in Kuala Lumpur today.

He was responding to questions on whether there was a delay in the appointment of the new chief justice.

“We have informed the Yang- Di Pertuan Agong and there is a need to inform the other rulers, so that is being done now.

“We are waiting for them to give their approval, then we will name the CJ,” he said.

Justice Richard Malanjum retired as chief justice on April 12 after holding the position for nine months. He retired after reaching the mandatory retirement age of 66 years and six months.

His appointment had not run smoothly as questions had been raised over the appointment of a non-Malay to the post.

The government has yet to make an announcement on his successor.

Singapore’s Straits Times had said in a recent report that the Dr Mahathir had submitted the government’s candidate for the post early this month, but had yet to receive the king’s consent on the matter. – April 19, 2019.

  • One wonders why Najib could have obtained the nod easier?!?!

  • After half-a-century of pampering it is time that royalty was given a reality check. What is happening now is yet another attempt by royalty to muscle in on a perceived weakened federal leadership. Tun should be given maximum backing by all to push the royals back into their palatial residences and keep them away from politicking and interfering in legitimate businesses.
