Perak can’t ‘meddle’ in Songkran celebration, says exco

THE Perak government cannot “meddle” in the Songkran Festival, organised annually by the Siamese community in Pengkalan Hulu, the state assembly heard today.

State Tourism, Arts and Culture Committee chairman Tan Kar Hing said the celebration is among the tourist attractions in the area bordering Betong in southern Thailand’s Yala province.

“The state government will try and monitor or minimise elements (related to the festival) that are sensitive or could spark dissatisfaction,” he said in reply to a question by Razman Zakaria (PAS-Semanggol).

Razman wanted to know the steps taken by the state administration to counter Muslims’ unease with the festival.

The Songkran Festival, which sees revellers splash each other with water, ushers in the new year for the Siamese community. – Bernama, April 18, 2019.

  • My family members return to Kroh (Pengkalan Hulu) every Songkran festival. Never heard of any unease. The Thai community at Kg Tasek, Pengkalan Hulu, live in harmony with other groups. They are very peaceful and hardworking, waking up early to tap rubber and tend to their farms.

  • What rubbish?? Rakyat is also unease with PAS creating social unrest in instigating Muslim against others. Get lost if you do not like to see others practising their faith or culture. Malaysia is not yours alone. Will be glad if you and your misfits goes to war torn area in Middle east where it is full of Muslim killing one another. selfish and racist to the extent of being disicable. why do tan kar hing tell himm off immediately instead of being polite and submissive. Enough is enough.!!!!
