THE Malaysian Council of Churches (CCM) wants Putrajaya to pull the brakes on a Singaporean black metal band’s concert here on Easter Day.
Its general secretary, Reverend Dr Hermen Shastri, said the live performance by Devouror is considered an affront to Malaysian Christians, given that their show will be held during one of the holiest days in the Christian calendar.
“The band, formed in 2018, prides itself on carrying lyrical themes that are anti-Christian and pro-Satanic.
“CCM calls upon the relevant authorities to explain the basis for granting permission to such bands that promote their music using extremely offensive and denigrating language that can hurt the religious feelings of others,” he said in a statement today.
Devouror is a five-piece black metal band comprising members of other metal bands.
Signed by Malaysian Metal Zone Records, it debuted its EP last January titled Slay the Satan.
“We hope the current government will look into the matter immediately, as this is not the kind of culture we want to promote among the youth of our country,” said Shastri.
Goatlordth Records is the concert organiser. The performance is scheduled to be held at the Angkasa Event Space in Bandar Tasik Permaisuri, and is titled KL for Satan, also the name of the band’s latest record release. – April 15, 2019.
