PAS is confident of regaining non-Malay support, particularly Indians’, in the next general election, said former Youth chief Nik Mohamad Abduh Nik Abdul Aziz.
The party lost the backing of this segment of voters in the 14th general election as a result of setting out on its own.
The son of the late PAS spiritual leader Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat said this is evident in the party’s close ties with MIC in recent months.
Working with the Barisan Nasional component has allowed PAS to tap into Indian voters, who were previously against the Islamist party, he said.
“We are not talking about seats. We are talking about voter support. It is true that the support of the Indian community was for Pakatan Harapan in GE14, but that is changing now.
“Chinese voters, too, are reconsidering. I am not saying Chinese and Indian voters have left PH, just that they are reconsidering their support. The people can see that.”
The Bachok MP rejected concerns that MIC will lose core supporters by working with PAS.
“The Indians who support PH are from urban areas. Those in rural areas still back MIC.”
He added that PAS’ cooperation with Umno and MIC is worrying PH, as it will be difficult for the ruling pact to hold on to seats in rural areas.
Though PAS lost non-Malay support in GE14, said Nik Abduh, the party gained the backing of more Malay voters.
Malays’ sentiment against BN led to PAS doing well in Kedah, Terengganu and Kelantan, he said.
The party retained Kelantan, wrested Terengganu and won 15 of Kedah’s 36 state seats.
PAS decided to go solo in the elections after breaking off ties with the now-defunct Pakatan Rakyat. It also saw some leaders leaving to form Amanah and join PH.
The party’s track record of winning federal seats had been good when it was in an alliance with DAP and PKR, thanks to non-Malay votes.
Heading into the general election last May, PAS led the informal Gagasan Sejahtera coalition. The party won 18 parliamentary and 90 state seats. – April 15, 2019.
