PAS is confident of regaining non-Malay support, particularly Indians’, in the next general election, said former Youth chief Nik Mohamad Abduh Nik Abdul Aziz.

The party lost the backing of this segment of voters in the 14th general election as a result of setting out on its own.

“The loss of non-Malay votes is temporary. We can win them back in time for the next elections,” Nik Abduh told The Malaysian Insight.

The son of the late PAS spiritual leader Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat said this is evident in the party’s close ties with MIC in recent months.

Working with the Barisan Nasional component has allowed PAS to tap into Indian voters, who were previously against the Islamist party, he said.

“We are not talking about seats. We are talking about voter support. It is true that the support of the Indian community was for Pakatan Harapan in GE14, but that is changing now.

“Chinese voters, too, are reconsidering. I am not saying Chinese and Indian voters have left PH, just that they are reconsidering their support. The people can see that.”

The Bachok MP rejected concerns that MIC will lose core supporters by working with PAS.

“The Indians who support PH are from urban areas. Those in rural areas still back MIC.”

He added that PAS’ cooperation with Umno and MIC is worrying PH, as it will be difficult for the ruling pact to hold on to seats in rural areas.

Though PAS lost non-Malay support in GE14, said Nik Abduh, the party gained the backing of more Malay voters.

Malays’ sentiment against BN led to PAS doing well in Kedah, Terengganu and Kelantan, he said.

The party retained Kelantan, wrested Terengganu and won 15 of Kedah’s 36 state seats.

PAS decided to go solo in the elections after breaking off ties with the now-defunct Pakatan Rakyat. It also saw some leaders leaving to form Amanah and join PH.

The party’s track record of winning federal seats had been good when it was in an alliance with DAP and PKR, thanks to non-Malay votes.

  • Nik Abduh, you are forgetting one very important aspect of your message. PH is also a majority Malay and Islamic aspect of the equation, ruling the country. Now, with everything being equal, PAS and UMNO also carry the extra corruption baggage which has not seen any kind of acceptable solution. Your loads of lies involving the RM90m and the payments to SR are still haunting all your leaders. Why should any sensible practising Muslim tolerate parties which indulge in 'lies and corruption' that will soon seen daylight via the pending court cases. PAS and BN will continue fighting sensational fires caused via the revelations during the court cases during the hearings. Being anti-corruption makes PH leaders will always stand tall among right thinking Malaysians.
